Brand Journey: MYKITA

The perfect blend of handcrafted modern design and cutting-edge technology delivers a featherlight frame that feels nearly invisible to you but catches the eye of everyone around you.

The MYKITA brand was founded in Berlin, Germany in 2003 and started its journey in a repurposed children’s daycare, called ‘Kita’ in German. This unique beginning inspired both the brand's name and its deeply rooted culture of curiosity and play. A truly independent brand, MYKITA created their own in-house production space, MYKITA HAUS, their modern manufactory where their diverse and talented team combine handcraft techniques and high technology processes.

Their first collection, Collection NO1, was released in 2004 drawing inspiration from the intricate folding and bending techniques of Japanese origami. Their groundbreaking line featured sleek stainless steel sheets and showcased the iconic spiral hinge, a signature of the brand's innovative design. The screwless design has a dual purpose of enhancing the frame's durability while also creating a sleek minimalist appearance.

Design isn’t the only area that the designers focus on; they are passionate about sourcing materials that are high quality and sustainable for their collections. The stainless steel used in MYKITA frames comes from Alleima, a Swedish company with a century-long legacy in scrap-based steel production and recycling. Their ACETATE, DECADES, and LITE collections feature new materials and lighter, ultra-thin frames and the Eastman Acetate Renew used in their acetate frames reduces the carbon dioxide footprint by up to a third per frame.

They didn’t stop there.

In 2010 MYLON was released, an innovative material developed in-house by MYKITA. Originally a 3D printing process used in the automotive industry, Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) is used to fuse polyamide powder into a solid creating a lightweight and durable material. The versatility of MYLON has elevated the eyewear experience allowing MYKITA to offer striking and larger designs, while weighing one third less than conventional plastic frames.

MYKITA continues to push the boundaries of eyewear, blending tradition and innovation in a way that ensures both style and sustainability. With each frame, they redefine what it means to wear something not just functional, but extraordinary.
